Mountain Sabinyo Volcano
Mountain Sabinyo Volcano is an extinct Mountain Volcano located in the Eastern part of the Virunga Mountains and the oldest Range East of Lake Kivu one of Africa’s Great Lakes and west of Lake Bunyonyi. In the local language the term Sabinyo means Tooth.
The mountain Volcano is the highest at 3,669 metres (12,037 ft) spanning borders of Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo i.e National Parks of Mgahinga National Park, Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park.
Hiking Mount Sabyinyo Volcano
Hiking Mount Sabinyo Volcano is very exceptional and done in Uganda comprising of hikers using both their hands to climb to the top. The Hike along the Mountain takes 8 hours, 4 hours to summit and 4 hours descent depending on the physical fitness of the group and weather condition.
Hiking the Mountain Volcano begins at the Park offices after short briefing by a ranger guide. You transfer with walking sticks to help you with the hiking through varying vegetation zones from Bamboo zone between 2400-2800m inhabiting Golden monkeys, Buffalo and Elephants to Hagenia Hypericum 2800-3200m then to the sub alpine zone at 3200. While here you view the Rwenzori Turaco which is endermic to the Albertine Rift region. Once at the summit, you will be at the center point viewing Uganda, Rwanda and the DR Congo.
Essential Gear to carry for the Mount Sabyinyo Hike
- Rain gear, i.e. rain coat
- Hiking shoes
- Stocking hat for warmth
- Garden gloves for cold weather at the top
- Long-sleeved shirt and trouser to protect from itchy plants e.g. stinging nettles
- Lunch and snacks
